Blues Guitar Lesson – Are They For Beginners?
Blues music has a huge fan base and many of those fans eventually learn to play the blues as well. The blues isn’t always the best place for beginner guitar players to start. In this article I list the 3 things to consider before you decide that blues guitar lessons are the best place for you to start. After answering these three questions honestly for yourself you’ll be better equipped to know where you should start.
Can you Play Chords
Right off the bat if you’re not able to play the basic open chords then definitely skip blues guitar lessons and look for a beginner course. The blues is entirely based on 12 bar chord progressions, which require you to know the basics chords.
The basic chords you should know are: A, B, C, D, E, F and G also knowing the minor versions would be helpful
Chords are something you could teach yourself with sites like youtube and guitar tutorial sites.
Do You Understand the Guitar Neck
By understanding the neck I mean: do you know the different places you can form chords on the neck? Do understand the fret spacing between each note? Both of these skills are important to understand and know so you can play the blues easily in a variety of keys.
Since blues has only a few patterns it relies on different keys. If you don’t know how to move from where you’re currently playing in the Key of A to the Key of D then you can get lost pretty fast.
Have you had previous lessons?
If you have never taken any guitar lessons before, nor have you even tried to teach yourself anything on the guitar don’t start with blues guitar. Take a couple of months of basic lessons that will teach you: string names, notes, chords etc.
After you have the basics down you can start translating those over to the blues.
If you were hoping that you could just skip the boring basics of the guitar and move right on to learning the blues I apologize to let you down. Just trust me that learning the blues will be more enjoyable if you do it with a solid foundation on the instrument.
Once you are ready to get started I’d suggest considering a blues guitar dvd. Video lessons will save you money and time when starting out.
